Weekly Kindness Practice: Everyone Loves a ‘Thank You!’

When was the last time you got something in the mail? With the age of the internet making it easy to do all communicating over cell phones and e-mail, it’s easy to forget how much charm and personality a hand-written note has, and how much joy it can bring to someone’s day. Chances are you can think of at least one person who has done something that has positively affected you, and would be touched by an unexpected ‘thank-you’ card. This week, take a few minutes to write a thank you card to someone and drop it in the mail. It will take you 5 minutes and most likely brighten that person’s entire day!

You Matter!

You Matter!

These are the two words that rung in my head like a bell as I was sitting in the movies this weekend trying to stay awake during Bond. This week, look for an opportunity to tell someone that they matter. Thank a friend or teacher, or leave an anonymous note for a neighbor or even a stranger. Getting a reminder that you are important can make a bad day better and a good day great!

Anonymous Coffee Date
When you find yourself at your regular coffee shop this week, pick up a $5 gift card when you check out. Leave the gift card in a place where it can be easily spotted such as on a bus stop bench, the window of someone’s car, taped to a parking meter, etc. You can include a short, anonymous and friendly note if you’d like to.

This Emotional Life: Rethinking Happiness

I watched this on Netflix about 6 months ago and was fascinated particularly by the ‘viral’ aspect of our emotions. I think we are generally unaware that when we’re having a bad day or we’re in pain in some way, our pain symptoms can cause pain to other people. We identify with pain easily which makes negativity dangerously catching. When we’re happy, however, we positively affect the people around us and in our community for up to 3 degrees of separation.
